just saw the movie children of men with liz, seth, and judi. personally, i think it was an alright movie, filmed with good cinematography and direction, but a little lacking in terms of everything else. based on the reviews, i expected more out of the dystopic future that it held, however it never truly came through on that end. allow me to explain.

in most dystopic movies or books, (v for vendetta, brave new world, 1984, minority report, et al), there is some thorough explanation of what the authoritarian government is trying to achieve and why it feels that it needs to retain power over the people. there is further explanation as to why the dystopic hero is truly the hero – he has the awareness of the “real” world that we know of to be flawed; the awareness of the skewed reflection in the mirror.

however, children of men seemed to have none of that. in fact, at its core, the movie turned out merely to be a smuggling movie, much akin to blood diamond, which i had seen earlier in the week. if you changed the diamond to a baby, djimon hounsou’s character to claire-hope ashitey’s character and leonardo dicaprio’s character to clive owen’s character, youd nearly have the same movie. personally, i think if you have to choose between the two movies, pick blood diamond since theres more social benefit to it.

as for future movies, it really doesnt look like much is coming out in the way of anything really relevant until around the end of february. in the meantime, there is now 1hr, 31min until the season 6 premier of 24 and i couldnt be any more enthusiastic about it :-D keep reading…
