26/02/03(200am)- things to talk about when i get back from CT- chez cora/charlie chaplin's the great dictator/hockey/tremblant/out with jessica and tina/laundry/coldplay/the trip. or maybe ill even get a chance thurs morning to do it. anyways, im pretty much packed, im leavng my laptop here since its only 4 days im gone. um. prolly gonna get up somewhat on the earlier side just so ive got some time to shower, get coffee and be somewhat coherent for the flight(s). first time ive had to connect going home, but maybe this also means i wont get stuck on one of those little planes. jen's picking me up from the airport, taking me back to my house. thurs we'll meet up sometime and then eventually go to the concert, go back to uconn afterwards. friday we'll go down to new haven, take the train in, ill do my interview, then catch up with margaret and get pepes on the way back. saturday we'll hang out or so and then prolly go to the wolf pack game in the evening. then sunday am im going back. anyways, thats that for now. signing off...
23/02/03(315pm)- protest pictures up now. my first roll with an SLR (thanks uncle kc) www.smalrus.com/protest.php.
21/02/03(1115pm)- again not much doing. basically i spend most of yesterday reading my dupuis frères book. it wasnt that bad a book but it was entirely in french. i read about 130 pages and then i just decided to do the book review. went to dinner at tandoori village with david and nick. ooh, margaret's coming up mar 14-18! yay friends! so in reciprocity, im going down to nyc to visit her. granted, she'll be here 4 days and ill be there 1 day, but still. mainly im going down because sony called me back today and they want an interview with me so my interview is next fri at 11am. yay! yay sony! yay big apple! yay friends!
woke up late today, went to take the stupid french test. then went back to work on the book review and then went to see the 405 showing of old school. decent comedy, but not a will ferrell movie and it started to get a little boring. i think animal house definitely was better and this was too much a ripoff. nonetheless, it was funny in various places, i give it **1/2 stars. picked up my slr shots and then came home. turns out i loaded the roll fine- ill scan them and get them up soon. some pretty good shots for my first time on an slr. thanks uncle kc.
tonight we watched one hour photo with robin williams. well made, definitely freaky. thats about it for tonight, im kinda wiped after yesterday's french reading. so, tomorrow am im going to breakfast at chez cora with david again. then im getting my haircut at 11 and thats about it. im on break now though and theres only 4 more days til i see jen. i cant wait.
20/02/03(1015am)-not much to report here. again. ive been sick with a cold all week. heavily put myself on vitamin c and echinacea and finally bought some advil cold and sinus. basically i wanted to get through this thing since my jen countdown is at 6 days. no way no how i was going home sick. tuesday and wed i felt really crappy and yesterday i only went to french cause we had to do the presentation. well it wasnt really a presentation, it was more like a short skit. so jessica was over here on tues night to work on it with me. but i was feeling crappy. going to rock history today probably though ive got a book to read for quebec history tomorrow which is an easy read, but its entirely in french, so im doing that today. im still loving the fact that lsat is done. its only been 2 weeks so its still some getting used to. got 2 cds, the music's new one and this group called the postal service. the postal service one is pretty interesting. it was done as a penpal project between this guy in seattle and this other guy in L.A. one guy would mail the other his song and then the other guy would write and record lyrics over it. and every month they'd have a new song and eventually the album was written and the 2 guys only met twice. how the record was created in this case might be more interesting than the record itself although the record itself is pretty decent.
oh i wanted to talk about the war in iraq before but i didnt. here is why the war in iraq is a personal vendetta and actually might have nothing to do with oil or anything like that: north korea. here weve got north korea running around blatantly violating IAEA by reactivating its nuclear reactors and waving itself infront of george bush's face. but george bush, presented with a more aggressive threat than saddam hussein, decides hes not going to take military action. there is a double standard. but why is george bush doing this? in an article i read for peacebuilding by rolf ekeus, ekeus questions the functionality of the united nations as a peacebuilding unit. in the article, he points out security council alignments in the war in kosovo that led to a chinese veto and the eventual use of NATO forces instead of UN forces. flash 10 years to the present. the chinese and the us already have some tense relations. not like in the cold war, but definitely not mr. clean. china would probably back the north koreans if the us engaged them and would likely use its veto power then on a war in iraq. if china vetos it, then george bush has a problem because without security council authority, any attack by the us will be seen as unilateral. this will only serve to inflame islamic radicalists who will view american unilateralism as the means to their end. thus, in order for a resolution on iraq, bush cant engage korea. and bush wants that resolution on iraq, hence why he hasnt engaged korea. and that is why this is a personal vendetta. otherwise, bush would have taken them both on. if he wants an iraq resolution, he wont engage the chinese on the korean issue.
anyways, i dunno what else i had to say i mean tomorrow is just another day of classes and then the first weekend of break. tomorrow ive got quebec history workshop, french test?, oh yeha and in peacebuilding we're taking a class trip to ottawa on mar 7. yay! anything else worth reporting? dont think so. so on that note...
16/02/03(215pm)- well last week was an interesting week. had its ups and downs, not much doing in classes. ive basically decided i hate the canadian history department. this makes two professors whom ive really disliked. i dont know if the quebec history prof counts or if he counts for quebec history or something. cause i like him. but desbarats and morton (not desmond) have not impressed me. and neither have their syllabi. i learn more from the recommended textbook, than from anything they say in their lectures. french is starting to get to be a waste. my oral participation is probably going down because i dont have anything to say in that class. period. i dont find anything hes talking about stimulating to the point where i have anything to say. or not say. its basically now- monday- grammar, wed- presentation, friday-short documentary clip. peacebuilding still good. brynen's a genius. rock history good, just had a midterm in that. thats about it for school.
outside of class, been keeping busy again, hence why no update in a while. valentines day was really good. jen made me a cd :) so classes were okay and i went for usual post-french coffee with jessica, miriam, and marie-eve. so we talked about all kinds of stuff, then i ducked out and left them to make fun of me and came back with a rose for each of them :) then they couldnt make fun of me. what can i say, i like making peoples days :) so i ran some errands and that was about it. later on, i met jessica and we went out to dinner at l'academie, which is this real nice restaurant on st. denis. first time id actually been there. bought a bottle of wine, had some nice conversation on our dateless valentines day dinner (her boyfriend was in new orleans). and then came back and chilled. finally we all went out to frappe and that was about it? nick's brother alex and his friend spencer came up from u of t for the weekend, so we met them there. oh and i came back and found that jen finally got the flowers. i send her this bouquet of peppermint and red carnations and a teddy bear whose name was spencer. and yes, the bear came that way, i didnt pick the name. but thats why it was perfect. i think she liked it. all in all, it was a good valentines day this year. i wasnt with my valentine, but i think we still managed to make it special.
yesterday the fam left for tucson/phoenix. meanwhile, i went to the antiwar protest downtown. took the slr for the first time and tried grabbing some pictures. i hope they came out well. i was experimenting with the f stop and what not. it was great to go to a protest outside of the states because its so much more intense. most signs were about not hating america but hating bush and how no one wants war. i got some pictures of some memorable signs and the crowd. oh the crowd was expected to be 25,000 and ended up being 150,000. and it was all peaceful. i didnt go to the entire rally, it was -20 out. but i walked from peel to st. laurent before my feet froze, i ducked inside and then decided to leave. apparently, it ended up at the american consulate with everyone singing "give peace a chance." it definitely was something to see. even during vietnam, im sure protests werent like this- the communication age has definitely put a new spin on protests. anyways, thats it for me for now. ive got some work to do before break. mostly along the lines of quebec history, but also other readings. we'll see what happens. only 10 more days...
15/02/03(1115am)- échec à la guerre - stop the war. not much going on this week although somewhat busy. going to the protest today. valentines day yesterday. more on that and the protest and my thoughts on the iraq situation later. parents and are going to tucson/phoenix for the week today. still frustrated about this internship. things going well with jen again. 11 more days til home. more later.
11/02/03(1200am)- new pictures. frustrated abut this internship. *sigh*
09/02/03(1100pm)- alls ive gotta say is thank god that test is over. didnt go too badly. im not sure if thats a good sign or bad since the test is scored on a curve. and everyone from my lsat class thought it seemed like an easier test. *shrug* well, march 1, ill know my score. eep. after that, i went with jake and agnes to peel pub when the test was done around one. we prolly had 4 pitchers and were there til 6. i was so drunk that i came home and passed out for 3 hours, woke up around 930pm and started recovering. so then we watched bourne identity around 1130 and then i came back, talked to jen and that was about it. no willy wonka.
woke up today, bummed around, went to parc lafontaine woith david, rachel, and sarah, and we skated. this city is great. when i was out in the reservoir, they rent lockers and skates and the like. and the reservoir's huge. like prolly 800 people were out skating. i love it. love it. nothing better than montreal in winter. went to chez josé afterwards for some crêpes and then came back, putzed around, talked to jen, talked to my parents, watched simpsons, thats about it. this week, its back to the regular swing of things- no lsat, trib meetings, regular classwork, etc etc. finally. just hope the test went well. 17 more days...
07/02/03(1030pm)- not too much to report. the fire yesterday was massive. for some pictures and information, visit the story on cbc the fire was massive and right now the entire place is in rubbles. i woke up at 7am to the smell of smoke. amazing since i didnt hear the trucks, and ive slept through earthquakes before. not much else doing here this week. some weak hockey being played by the habs but its only 2 games back since the all star break. i missed the all star game but i forget why. oh right, i went to see kurosawa's seven samurai. i can see why its one of the top films of all time. it was a long 3 1/2 hrs with a 10 min intermission, but a really excellently scripted movie plotwise and the likes. highly recommend it, but be willing to spend the time. anyways. this week was a bum week. theres been lsat work, staying calm, the fire and thats been about it. tomorrow is the big test day. not looking forward to it at all. tomorrow night is thus willy wonka night. ;) anyone who wants is invited so i can lift the heavy burden of the test. its 19 days tomorrow until i see jen. everyday im looking more and more forward to it. its gonna be a helluva weekend and im definitely glad to have someone like her. im hoping that my trip home is a good indicator of things working out.... anyways, on that note, i should head to bed. its a long day tomorrow...
06/02/03(730pm)- normally i wouldnt be up at 730am, let alone posting. well maybe saturday i would be. but there is a 5 alarm fire being put out right now at 82 prince arthur est. more later. now bed.
01/02/03(240pm)- haha. look at the date. gung hay fat choy to all my asian friends celebrating lunar new year. not much going on this week, just your standard classes, a paper for french on that horrible séraphin movie, a review of the morcheeba movie. um not much else doing i guess. i updated my current cd list. state of the union was mediocre. the cbc radio thing ended up not being much other than a free participation bonus points because we couldnt even hear them. um. lsat sucks. one week til the actual test, i just dont know about it. nhl all star game tonight.
the only other big news was todays space shuttle columbia disaster. it was the first shuttle accident since the challenger almost 7 years ago to the day (28.01.86), but i was only 4 years old at that time. its always a tragedy when something like this because astronauts are heros. they're the people whom we admire the most because of their ability to leave this world and enter the heavens. maybe its my star trek side reemerging, but i always had some fascination with astronauts and seeing the world from above. never wanted to actually be one, but just to be able to go on the shuttle and float, to be able to see the blackness of space and the light of the moon. space travel was supposed to be something that benefitted humankind, transcending all politics. on board was the first israeli astronaut, ilan ramon and we hoped that maybe this would start to show the ability for the heavens to be our peace haven. but to all, this disaster was a tragedy for mankind. space shuttle columbia RIP.
anyways, tonight theres a party, tomorrow is working and i dont know what else. theres 25 days til i go back to ct and i cant wait. im missing jen so much and i cant wait til im finally able to see her. its gonna be such a great weekend. on that note, perhaps i should stop now before i get sappier :-p
