France 1999-The Trip of a Lifetime

A Daily Journal of a Week in the Overseas Life of the Smalrus

20/4

Today's mainly a travel day. We got up at 07h30, got ready, ate breakfast, at bus at 08h30. Boarding for Mt. St. Michel. Mt. St. Michel is a monastery on a peninsula in Bretagne that becomes an island when the tide is high. Should be interesting. 5 hr bus ride. Oh yeah, btw, yesterday when I took a CD outta my Discman, the motor came with it. And a screw's loose, so now I gotta get a new one cause I don't think that for the price, I could get it fixed. Eh. I've had it 4 years. I'm sure I could get a much better Sony one now for the same price I got my old one 4 years ago. So since Julian's CD player shopping, I guess I'm going with him. Anyways...So I've been mooching off everyone else's CD players. We stopped twice to get stuff. Got some cookies and Orangina Rouge at the gas station. Stopped later for lunch. Saucisses frites, which was like hot dogs and fries, and apple custard pie. Not bad. We then continued on our way for Mt. St. Michel. Passed by Fougères, where the oldest European medieval castle is. Then we were on our way again.

Me again...Well, we got to Mt. St. Michel and looked around. Just what I said (Sorry, as I'm writing this, I have more important things to say. Perhaps I should explain them now and everything else later.)

Perhaps the highlight of my day was my little adventure with Sarrah Candee. Ok, Andrew walked out to Sarah and Bethanne's room and Meg Coughlin called him over to watch Lois and Clark in French. I didn't know if he had the key to our room, so I went out to look for him. I step outside and look straight across at the bungalow in my direct field of view. There is Sarrah Candee in her sports bra standing at the door. Then Val Pare runs up to the door to cover. Jess Ragosta opens the sliding curtain, points at me, and starts laughing at me. I wasn't gawking or anything, just taken aback by the sight. I definitely won't look at her in the same light again. Meanwhile, now everyone in the vicinity starts laughing and I'm not sure at who. Not like she should be embarrassed of what she has, just not sure that she needs to flash me. Which was interesting...Why me of all people? Not that I minded =) Fact is, it's not like I haven't seen naked women but it's kinda different when those people are posing and you don't know them personally vs. people you know running around flashing you. So now at dinner, I was like, trying to keep my cool, but we kept cracking jokes at my experience. Not at Sarrah, but at the whole thing. So meanwhile, her whole group gets up to leave and head over to, from what I overheard, tell Mrs. McKenna, Gorman, and Cipollini. So I'm freakin embarrassed because I didn't mean to intentionally look. It happened by accident. So a.) why did it happen? b.)why do I feel guilty? c.) why am I most embarrassed? I dunno. I'm not gonna deny what I saw, it's just interesting that of all people, out of the clear blue, it happens to me. Skipping ahead later tonight...We were at Mt. St. Michel and she came up outa nowhere, got in my face, and took my picture. Of course everyone started laughing at me, like Jess. They make it seem like I'm 11 years old. Like I don't know about anything. Why, cause I don't go out drunk, like they prolly were? I prolly know more about sex, etc, then they think I know. Which makes me mad when they patronize me to feel like I'm 11. I'm not a moron. If not for a long time, this whole experience will stick out for the rest of the trip. Now to have to sit next to her on Mon. morning in French class.

Anyways...We arrive in Mt. St. Michel. Go to the monastery. Very big, etc, incorporating Gothic and Romanesque architecture. I basically went around w/Mr. Sylvester, translating stuff into English. It's been the first bad weather day. Sarah bought 2 daggers for herself. Then we went to our Hotel Motel Vert. 59 Bungalows. Andrew and I are sharing one. They're better than the cabins for fall convention. Bathroom and actual held shower, TV, etc...In front is a supermarché. Picked up a 150cL Orangina Rouge, a Toblerone, brush like the silver one, and more Solero Shots. Blah blah blah. Been interesting w/the combos going on in different rooms. Reminds me of Road Rules. We ate dinner at the hotel weird salad, chicken, fries, and nice, too rich chocolate mousse. Then walked to Mt. St. Michel. Jon tells me during supper that Carrie thinks Andrew likes her. Which we all know is wrong. Twisted girl she is. So he's gotta say something soon. Meanwhile on the walk to Mt. St. Michel, Julian and I talk bout Jenn, Nicole, and Angela. He wants some =) (Julian layin the smack down =) ). Walked back and rapped on the way. Bought a télécarte. Spoke to mom for 46 credits told her as much as possible in 46 credits. 4 more left. Anyways...Nice shower, here I am. Boobies anyone? =)

Google Finance

I've become a big advocate of Google. I think they truly have managed to break the hold of Microsoft and if anything, have also demonstrated the sheer power of the cliched Web 2.0. This finance site is no small potatoes either. The graphs are so simple yet so lush in data, and the rest of the pages are no different. Perhaps the most appealing feature is the portfolio which, with a Google account, lets you enter in how many shares of a stock you own and track all of its vitals in one page. I entered in my 401k breakdown and at any given time, it lets me visualise my account better than my 401k planner does.

Gastroenteritis

The stomach flu got me at the end of the year, making for the worst sickness I've felt in probably 10-15 years. Every hour, I was either on or over the toilet and at times, had to keep a bag next to the bed for those times I couldn't make it to the toilet fast enough. From what I've heard, I wasn't the only one to catch this horrible disaster in the past 2-3 weeks. I was supposed to go to Andrew's for the opening of the 7 year old time capsule and video but the stomach flu sidelined my plans (I'm finally at about 85% recovery) and for that, you are the asshole of the week.
