29/06/03(1100pm)- HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY JON!!!!
listening to some CKAC for some practice. also, jen got me a copy of l'étranger by camus, so basically im having a camus-filled summer. but l'étranger seems easier to read than the other ones. *shrug* i miss chicoutimi. i miss my buddies from classes. but i got a picture in the mail from maggie yesterday and as you can see above, its been altered a bit. doing the crossword puzzle now.
not much been happening the last couple days. grampa came in with marilyn. she's really nice. fairly chatty like myself and very cultured woman. and man, with my grandfather around, its sad. my future looks bleak. i look at my dad at 51 and my grandfather at 78 and dont see much future for myself. the humour, the impatience, the stubbornness... all of it comes full circle. if only i could change myself instead of following in line with the ross male genes... *sigh*
anyways, so the whole laptop thing is pretty much coming down to me getting a new one and trying to figure out how im gonna afford it. refinance the budget i guess. um, really not much to report. friday night, i cant remember what went on other than going to jen's to watch amelie with her, but yesterday was stuart's bar mitzvah in the am. did a torah portion and got to wear my new suit. looks good i think. today we had a bbq with grampa and marilyn, jen, and fran, and the fam. and then rane tonight at the manchester bandshell. not much else to say. busy week between work and family and spending time with jen... anyways, thats it for now, more when i think of it...
26/06/03(1030pm)- HAPPY 21st BIRTHDAY ANDREW AND SARAH!!!!
let's see...the screen on my laptop is shot. 650$ to repair. so im rethinking just getting a new computer for law school now since its not much more than it is to repair it. about tuesday's concert....
Wilco with Rane opening
6/24/03, Oakdale Theatre, Wallingford, CT
rane:
I. The Wanderer, Secanendo Maldonado, The Gambler, Single Color, Limitless, Center
Wilco:
I. Muzzle of Bees, I am Trying to Break Your Heart, Kamera, War on War, Atleast That's What You Said, Sunken Treasure, How to Fight Loneliness, , Jesus, etc., Heavy Metal Drummer, Red-Eyed and Blue, Pot Kettle Black, I'm the Man Who Loves You, Poor Places, Reservations
E1. Handshake Drugs, One by One, Misunderstood, Far and Away, California Stars
E2. We've Been Had, Casino Queen, Outtasite (Outta Mind)
rane set: flawless. to hear them at the oakdale with that sound quality, that atmosphere, the audience that was filtering in, wade's fucking unbelievable lighting and the flawlessness of the performance- i would put it in my top 3 alltime rane moments. with 7.27.01 and 8.14.97. yeah....i know the guys had a limited repertoire to work with right now until they figure out more songs with bruce, but this definitely was otherwise one of the best rane shows i think ive seen. unfortunately too short.
wilco set: all i knew of wilco was yankee hotel foxtrot but i think the concert was an excellent show. liked the drummer, especially a couple of the yhf songs and also tweedy's guitar was pretty slamming as the show went on. great stage presence and audience interaction. i thought they were going to be more country (per alt.country) but they were a lot more rock and roll. jeff tweedy is this generation's bob dylan.
line of the night: "Hey, we dont play at your gigs..." ~ Jeff Tweedy to the guy playing the harmonica in the audience during "One by One"
23/06/03(600pm)- ok, since the last time... thursday, didnt do much, friday didnt do much. saturday went to amys graduation party for like an hour and then went back home. ate and then went to see alex and emma with cheryl. then went to applebees afterwards. good to talk to someone else and make another new friend. came home around 1130 and went to bed. got up yesterday, not much happened during the day until jen came over during dinner. that was about it. not much has been happening. oh and i also talked to the girards last night for about 45 min. nice conversation.
in other news, rane is opening for wilco tomorrow night!!!!!!!! sonic youth pulled out and rane is taking their spot! woooooo! oh yeah and i got 10 sets of guitar strings for 30$. thats like 50% off. not much more to say, everyone go to the oakdale tomorrow for the wilco show. and then on sunday around 7pm, at the manchester bandshell...
18/06/03(900pm)- qu'est-ce qui se passait ici? rien. seriously not much has happened here in the last week or so other than that i went to see rane with jen on saturday night at powder mill barn after her yard sale. not many people were there at all but i met the new drummer, heard like 3 of the 4 new tunes. they sound pretty good although im fearing a little lapse into a patterned writing style thats becoming more formulaic and less innovative in terms of writing. maybe im getting too nitty here. anyways. now i wanna open mic, im tired of doing nothing musically here, but i dont know anyone to jam with and i cant put out an ad to form a band cause im not here but til august.
mowed the lawn yesterday, worked at the bank all week, sorta coloured my hair mais sans même effet. i should call the girards. oh et j'ai achété une billet pour le spectacle de jean leloup au metropolis.
still been finding some more francophone customers and talking to them. digging the beth orton cd. i dunno, theres not much else to say right now. summer tends to be my deadder months since i dont do much but the same old in and outs of work. oh, amy came back today after like years of never being there. her grad party's saturday afternoon, so ill prolly go to that. no new cds to review now. i sorta updated my cdlist, but i think i might have forgotten a bunch. oh yeah, sunday i saw l'auberge espagnole with elise. not a bad movie. entertaining although im a little not sure about why it was nominated for 6 césars... meh. it was entertaining and good to see foreign language films here. im really running out of things to say so ill stop now. more when it happens?
13/06/03(930pm)- the next time im having sex is when im 42. 41 if im lucky enough.
11/06/03(1015pm)- reviewed radiohead's new album hail to the thief. first smalrus.com review in a long while. other than that, not much else to say. tracked "a punchup at a wedding." and also saw finding nemo last night with jen. cute movie.
09/06/03(1130pm)- im cheesed that my parents wont let jen sleep over and i cant sleep over at her place, im cheesed cause i really only talk to two of my friends now, one's now in manchester and the others now in nyc...
and i wish there was people to jam out music with here...like good music, not clearchannel radio shit...
and i wish that fucking things were open after 10pm and that i could go get the new radiohead album at midnight...theres 70 channels and not a damn thing on tv. the news is all shit, people treat you like shit, money is everything, and its boring. yeah, id rather be in mtl right now. i should have gotten an under the table job up there and lived up there this summer
yeah im in a really pissed mood right now. maybe it was onset by the fact that the ducks just lost the cup. or i miss speaking french all the time. i miss the niceness of people. field day was pretty sweet but the weather sucked. ill eventually have some pictures of the bands. beck was injured by a stagehand- saw ours (sucked), liz phair (sucked), beth orton (i might have to get her cd), thursday (so so), underworld (awesome), bright eyes (pretty good), then was too fucking wet and my sandals were soaked, so i warmed up with a coffee. then beasties were on for a while- was awesome. and radiohead was unreal. sound in the stadium was phenomenal and i couldnt believe they would make that music live. 2 hours- 23 songs later, i think we were all mezmorised.
not much been going on the rest of the week other than hockey watching, the concert, crashing at margarets after the show, work, and seeing jen here and there, im just cheesing. and i miss chicoutimi. its the last week of the 5 week program and other than a comment from daniel, no ones written to me or anything. i miss that place and the people, the friends i made, the girards, etc...
happy 3rd birthday camelopardalis. now if only rane would make another fucking album, that would be the real deal. and maybe if i wasnt so cynical tonight, this wouldnt be so bleak.
04/06/03(1230am)- not a long update now, not motivated for it. but i put up pictures from chicoutimi. just check out the pictures page and theres 2 new rolls.
01/06/03(230am)- been a couple of days, but ive been tellement busy. still franglaising even though im back in mtl maintanent. lets see... not a whole heck of a lot has differed in the last week versus les autres. lundi soir, did some work for my offre d'emploi for a lawyer. tuesday, gave my presentation, looked for the story of the golem in french, couldnt find it til late. was tough. wed was improv night, but i missed it due to my presentation. thursday i gave my presentation and it came out well. took me 8 hours wed to do it though. wed night we went to bistrot. same ol same ol at bistrot. so the presentation thursday, my prof didnt think i translated it- he thought i was reading from a book or something. guess i did well. and yes, i translated 5 pages of my own english writing into french. thursday i was tired from all the work so i laid low, fell asleep on the futon watching the hockey game. friday day was sad- my last day at the school. so classes were somber for me, but i got a special lunch with all the other 3 week-ers and we got letters of attestation and whatnot. bravo! went shopping for costumes with eric. pants, trench coat, tie, and vest=12$ not bad. so i made a good spy and we all had a ball at the "spy party" at the centre social. after the party, we headed to bistrot, but it was too packed so me and daniel went to mcdo's and ended up running into julie and patricia, two of the animatrices, so we talked to them a while and they gave us rides home. this am, i woke up to do d'arbre en arbre at 10am. talk about awesome... i cant think of a better way to end my last day in chicoutimi. truly truly fun and spectacular.
and now its back to the duldrums of reality. i finished d'arbre en arbre around 3, was in chicoutimi at 4, walmart wouldnt do 1hr photos by 5, so i showered, packed, and drove. drive was decent although rainy in some places. took a picture of the "high moose risk" sign- saw a moose or reindeer (prolly reindeer) on the way. and ended in mtl around 11. went to bifteck for a brew, then to ste. elizabeth for a cider, and now thats it. tomorrow im getting up, doing some final packing of stuff here and then its off to sw around 3ish. hope to see jen along the way home and then its back to work on monday.
my stay in chicoutimi was undoubtedly one of the best experiences of my life. maybe tomorrow or monday when i get pictures back (and scan them up here on monday), ill reflect in general on the whole experience, but for how, im a bit tired from driving and still got tomorrows drive. bonne nuit!
