Smalrus Links

I'm always online. So why shouldn't it be expected that I know of some cool websites? What, you think mine is the only one i check up on...?

-McGill University, located in Montréal,Québec, Canada. It's located in downtown Montréal. Come visit sometime.

- The Montreal part of canada.com. It's got a lot of links to stuff pertaining to Montreal life, including the Montreal Gazette, Montreal's main English Newspaper. Since it's on canada.com, it's easy to go to sites for other Canadian cities.

Official Site of the Montreal Canadiens- My favourite hockey team since Chris Frechette in kindergarten liked Patrick Roy. Been a fan ever since. We're on year two of the five year plan to win the cup and we're already looking like we're gonna make the playoffs this year. Go Habs Go!

Cool band. Cool CDs. Go pick em both up. The latest one, Blue, is one of the best albums I own. pure lyrical and musical rock genius. It's about time they came out with a new one though.

-This band is amazing. Their sound is pure soul. I could listen to their cd, Tourist for hours on end. And surprisingly, they put on an excellent live show...

- This is rane's official homepage. My number one favourite band of all time. There's tons of information here like tour dates, album info, band info, live mp3s, etc...

- My second favourite band, Coldplay is a throwback to the Beatles meets Radiohead. These guys make textured rock music that is melodic and soothing and has amazing lyrics for the ladies.

- An official Sigur Ròs Website. This is the best website for Sigur Ròs, an amazingly stunning band from Iceland. Their lyrics are fluid and their sound can only be described as wintry and sonically ethereal.

- One of the best bands in the last 10 years, these guys have continually inspired British music as well as the alternative genre with their ability to push the artistic envelope. They go from rock to avantgarde to tempered avantgarde to a synthesis of all their work. Amazing. See also:

for constantly updated news.

- Click here for Star Trek: Continuum

-Everything you wanted and needed to know about the European Union. Read up on the Maastricht Treaty, or learn more about the Euro. It's all here..

- Get the latest concert info here. You can search for tour dates by artist, date, or location. It comes in handy to find out when and where the latest artists to hit the montreal scene are playing. The only downside is it doesn't show all the bands out there.

- These guys used to have free wake up calls, reminder calls, etc. But now it's a paid plan. 5$ a month gets you 30 wake up calls a month. I guess if you're like me and have trouble getting up in the mornings, this is the place to go. You put in your info, they call you with an automated voice "Hello, this is Mr. Wakeup. Time to get up."

- This is a good site to look for mixed drinks recipies, by drink name, ingredients, etc. It's good for the novice bartender who's looking to make something fancy. But if you're like me, something simple like rum and coke or gin and tonight will do just fine.

- I feel sorry for the saps that read this site and take any one word of it to heart. This guy is amazingly vitriolic in everything he writes, but is extremely realistic and hilarious in pointing out just how serious and stupid people are. Watch him tear to shreds people who accuse him of making typos or "guiltless grills" or the ass-kicking "I am better than your children" pages.

- This is the page of one of my friends from USY. Out of anyone I know, this guy knows the most about computers, web page design, coding languages, and the whole nine yards. I turn to him for various computer problems including ones that deal with my slow laptop or my web page coding. I owe version 7.0 of The Smalrus Web Site to him since he helped me with the php. I recommend checking out his page, it's really good and he updates almost every hour...

Andrew's Experimental Page of Thoughts- My best friend from back in South Windsor, I think he finally found a web page provider that's not going out business in the near future like nbci.com. Short of Jeff's site, I'm not sure I know of anyone who puts so much detail into his updates. I used to know what was for lunch at Buckley, but lately, he's been putting me out of the loop. It's still cool though because I feel like I've never left CT.

super marg- This is one of my close friends from back home, Margaret. She goes to Barnard College in NYC and sometimes its interesting to get a perspective on one of the world's largest cities.

The Gin Bucket Website- My friend Jon's website on the traditional art of "basting." Lest I say more, check out the site to find out what the Gin Bucket is....

http://www.geocities.com/kg9jp- My Uncle KC's web site. This man is a ham, so I'm not quite sure where along the lines he decided to make himself a webpage, but he's got a few links for hams, as well as downloadable QSL cards. His user space on geocities is also his call sign, so if you're surfing the radio waves and you come up on them, thats him.

theLOFTstudio- The site of Justin Novick, graphic designer for rane. His style is "an illustrative display of the balance between color and typography" with influences inclusive of Scandinavian modern graphic design. word?

Fall From Reason- My ranefan friend Lars set up this BBS style forum for ranefans to chat outside of the newsgroup setting. With the new ranetides forum though, the delphi forum seems to have become inactive.

::::Renata v3::::...- Another good CT local band, this is Renata. Their album She Walked With Kings is one to get. And they're coming out with a new lp this summer.

- Up to the minute news online. Either that, or BBC Online.

Scott Pakin's automatic complaint-letter generator- This one's a funny site where you can instantly make automatic complaints about anyone, just by filling in a couple of fields

The Village Church Yard- This is an awesome 3eb site with great updated info.

MxTabs.net- One of the better and more frequently update guitar tab sites on the net. It's where I get most of my music.

The Alternative Dictionaries- Where you can find how to say obscene things in many languages

http://www.thehungersite.com- Donate food to the needy here. All it is is a free click on your web browser

Washington Post: E.J. Dionne- This man is my favourite editorialist, obviously based from the Washington Post. He's also senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, one of Washington's leading think tanks.

Winamp.com- My mp3 player of choice. Try the surgical steel skin.

Bearshare.com- In my opinion, this is the best gnutella clone out there. Napster was overrated, then went through the big giant legal proceedings, but I found Gnutella to be better than Napster from the start. This is one of the better Gnutella Clones.

Billboard.com- Full daily music news as well as the weekly Billboard music charts for sales. They're good, but mainly mainstream stuff is put up there.

Go!Zilla if you have a slow connection, this is a great site that lets you start downloads, stop and resume at a later time. its what i used to download mp3s with off the web in the old 56k days

Google Finance

I've become a big advocate of Google. I think they truly have managed to break the hold of Microsoft and if anything, have also demonstrated the sheer power of the cliched Web 2.0. This finance site is no small potatoes either. The graphs are so simple yet so lush in data, and the rest of the pages are no different. Perhaps the most appealing feature is the portfolio which, with a Google account, lets you enter in how many shares of a stock you own and track all of its vitals in one page. I entered in my 401k breakdown and at any given time, it lets me visualise my account better than my 401k planner does.

Gastroenteritis

The stomach flu got me at the end of the year, making for the worst sickness I've felt in probably 10-15 years. Every hour, I was either on or over the toilet and at times, had to keep a bag next to the bed for those times I couldn't make it to the toilet fast enough. From what I've heard, I wasn't the only one to catch this horrible disaster in the past 2-3 weeks. I was supposed to go to Andrew's for the opening of the 7 year old time capsule and video but the stomach flu sidelined my plans (I'm finally at about 85% recovery) and for that, you are the asshole of the week.
