29/03/03- Welcome...

03 Mar 200303 Mar 200303 Mar 2003

29/03/03(350am)- lemme expand those 3 thoughts up:

a) ive been enthusiastic about applying for this position since november when maryn and scott both recommended me to apply. they were the ones that seeded the idea in my head. and at first, i was reluctant about taking such a big jump in one year. but basically ive been telling everyone since november that this is what i wanted to do next year and it was. this was a position i wanted for me. b) i wanted this for my resume because its essentially what i want to do with my life. i cant do the mirror or the hour or anything like that. i needed this for my law school resume because the trib's basically my only campus involvement. its the only thing that ive actually been committed to doing since ive been here, the only extra curricular that not only interested me, but that ive been proud to be a part of. c) since next years my last year and having seen what goes on, i thought this would be good for my writing and everything. seeing whats gone on in the editorial office, what the demands of the editors and all that- i realised what it would be for my personal growth and being able to expand the paper and the scope of the paper. a lot of what i wanted to do was take more initiative with the francophones in the mcgill community- noting that french events barely get covered in this city and that we have no francophone writers. theres a lot i wanted to do with the trib as a result of the last year. being able to get more writings published out to people the editorials, being responsible for the section. but thats not happening now.

im still upset, im still pissed, moreso upset. thats that. im going to bed. sim tomorrow.

(1240am)- didnt get the a&e editor position. im pissed. im upset. im sad. im crying. this just isnt what i wanted to hear. a) ive been enthusiastic about applying for this since november. b) i wanted this for my resume because its essentially what i want to do with my life. c) its my last year next year and having seen what goes on, i thought this would be good for my writing and everything. fuck it up its stupid goddamn ass. dunno if i want to write for them next year. told them i did, but i dont know right now. quite frankly, i dont want to talk about it right now. fuck it up its stupid goddamn ass.

22/03/03(250pm)- i would love to post right now, but the sim has me all tied up almost all week. we're in prep phase right now (it starts monday am) and im going nuts with ims running all over the place. im way backlogged on things ive gotta talk about, mostly margarets visit. but no time. in the meantime, ive set up a government of brynania site for the simulation. its highly worth checking out especially since im doing a lot of shit with it for this simulation, rather than updating here. so if you want to see where my week is going, go there instead.

19/03/03(1020pm)-proof that this is a propaganda war: 1. they waited until 7pm pacific time to start the war. 2. check out the difference between us.cnn.com and edition.cnn.com. ill have to update more on margaret and the simulation later. and, i cant work my web counter.

13/03/03(1020pm)- pardon my political correctness, but this thing with the america vs. france on iraq is the gayest thing ever. first "freedom fries" and "freedom toast," then "liberty dressing," dumping french wine and taking down french flags off anything french owned. gay gay gay gay. (no, i dont hate gays, ive done away with political correctness. the 90s are over.) now, theres a bill proposed by some florida representative that the us government pay families with us vets buried in france to have the remains brought back to the states. who the FUCK cares. they were part of history, why should they be disturbed because america is anti-french. in fact, id be willing to think america is more anti-french than france is anti-american. not only that, but americans are making a big deal over the fact that the french are "ungrateful" for american support? america liberates france in wwII and you think that they own the fucking continent. newsflash, france was a superpower long before the us was. and while the us did liberate france, it was nice that they also decided to enter the war to stop hitler. talk about hypocritical. which makes you wonder, if the japanese didnt draw america into wwII, would the americans have given two shits about liberating france? of course not. so before dumping your beaujoulais and camembert, just remember, the face of hypocrisy can also have two sides...

(1250am)- kid koala is the illest dj around. if you get a chance to see him, check him out, his scratching is amazing. also, the beastie boys have a new song out. check it.

11/03/03(510pm)- its that time again, american spring break time. no offence here to julian, jon, eric, or margaret, who's coming up in 2 days, but i attribute this entry to the spring breakers whom you can pick off the streets like gnats. no offence to them because they are not traditional montreal spring breakers. they arent coming in droves, they are getting the montreal experience from me, montreal inhabitant. american spring breakers are easy to pick out by the following attributes:

1. beer. the quebec drinking age is 18 years old. obviously this is why most american spring breakers come to montreal. noted choices of beer are american schlock like budweiser or pussy imports like corona or heineken. why bother. if you're gonna be in canada, drink canadian beer. besides we all know american beer is pisswater. americans can be seen bringing tons and tons of beer out of deps.

2. clothing. most of the americans that come here seem to have never been to an international city and dress like they just picked their clothes out of the laundry hamper. american eagle, abercrombie, baseball caps, sweatpants, or collegiate tshirts/sweatshirts. in addition, since most of them are unaware of montreals wintry climate even though it's "spring" break, they are significantly underdressed. take the girls coming out of the hotel last night that were dressed up in short short skirts. i almost felt bad since it was -12, but then i was like, "nahhh." most dont realise that a tuque is handy to have. so is a warm jacket of some sort. a simple fleece isnt sufficient in -12. its nice out when its 0, not -12.

3. social attributes. aside from the conspicuous accents, american spring breakers group in 3 or more. often they're a group of 3 guys and 3 girls or thereabouts. many spring breakers find other spring breakers from either home or from school that they didnt know are in montreal. they roam the streets of montreal shouting across streets at the top of their lungs, often drunk. why? because when youre a spring breaker in montreal, its like frosh week. only you're american and show complete and utter disregard for the fact that people call this city their home. spring breakers are often spotted around crescent, st. laurent, or peel asking for the following locations: peel pub, supersexe, any other strip club.

you can usually pick them off one by one. yeah thats what i have to say. welcome to spring break.

10/03/03(1225am)- not much been doing here as of late. ive had a cold all week so ive been resting and trying to get better since margaret is coming up late late thursday and i want to not be sick. bad week for the habs. really not much been going on. the mirror on my slr seized so i had to take it in, but its gonna cost a ridiculous amount to fix, so thats out of commission for now. trip to ottawa on friday was really fun. well not fun cause i was sick, plus we sat in one room all day to listen to the speakers, but good just to get away. plus one of the speakers gave me this idea that can be used substantially in my peace building paper. been reading mike moore's downsize this. ridiculously good. this is the second book ive read of his and also having seen bowling for columbine 3 times, im loving his work. he's taken left-wing liberalism to the average man. anyways, ive gotta get up to do a french presentation tomorrow so im gonna hit the hay because ive got not much to say anyway. til next time?

04/03/03(1045am)- ok, im gonna do my best to update from the past week. because its gonna be so long and basically the only person its reminding is me, im gonna do a day by day briefing of what happened.

sat, 22/02- woke up and got my haircut from mathilde. that woman is a riot still and im gonna have coffee sometime with her before the next time i see her to find out how her weekend went and tell her how mine was in ct. anyways, i got out of that somewhat at a decent hour considering i also got my hair coloured, so i called up david and we went to chez cora cause theres this cute girl there that was checking david out the weekend before. yeah. try and hook a brotha up. anyways, we went walking around the downtown a while before going to see charlie chaplins the great dictator, which was chaplin's first talkie. really good and comical movie, but only if you're into that 30s-40s slapstick. like im a big three stooges/marx bros. fan, but not everyone is into that kind of comedy. the movie was subtitled in french and i found myself watching the movie with the subtitles also. ah well.

sun, 23/02- dont think i did much, just milled around the apt, watched hockey and probably watched the habs fall again. i just found out they traded petrov to nashville, i dunno if thats good or bad for us yet since we only got a draft pick.

mon, 24/02- woke up mad early and went skiing with david at tremblant for the day. turns out, its 67$ for bus/all day lift ticket there. anyways, weather was perfect, snow conditions were perfect, the whole mountain was open. we got a bunch of good runs in, mainly blues and 2 or 3 blacks. i even tried some shallow tree skiing. the day was excellent and my legs got quite the workout. it was my first time out on the slopes since the rez ski trip to mont. st. anne, so i was determined to head out cause i felt bad that i havent gotten to use my skis since ive been here, plus i wanted to go. we couldnt have gotten a better day to go though. came back around 730 and bummed around. jessica invited me out to meet her best friend tina from KW, so the 3 of us went out but ended up at frappe. it was a nice night and tina seemed pretty cool. didnt make it too late a night cause i wanted to get up at a decent hour on tuesday am.

tues, 25/02- i dont remember what time i woke up, but it wasnt too late. i wanted to get my laundry in so i could have it back before the concert so i could use it to pack already. while i was waiting for my laundry, i went out to look for a new directors chair since the canvas on mine is torn down the middle and unsittable. but i ended up going to sports experts since they were having a fin de la saison sale. ended up getting a nice nice pair of white snowpants for 60$ since they were 50% off. trick: unisex products that say they're feminine are often the best buy if you're a guy. those ski pants are plain white, the only difference is theres "a little more room in the hips for women." yeah, like anyone could tell that from trying them on. so instead of buying 250$ mens columbia pants at 30%, i bought 110$ womens ripzone pants at 50% off and you cant tell they're womens. anywhosy, got my laundry back, started packing, then went out with claire to the coldplay concert at the bell centre. excellent show. the music opened up for them and although it was a little too loud, for 18 year olds, theyve got potential. their cd's not that bad either. coldplay played and chris martin spoke entirely in french to the audience, which had them going nuts. really good show, but i still say sigur rós was the best show ive been to in my life. i didnt cry at coldplay. either night. went to mikes for a little grub after the show, then came home and made it an early night.

wed, 26/02- i woke up on the medium side, almost missing my alarm. got to the bus station on time and to dorval. door to gate in 15 minutes. wow. this was going into the states. good to know that billions of dollars spent on security and for the first time in 3 years, they didnt put rubber gloves on with me. hah. but it ended up that my flight to newark was delayed a while so i was sitting around the airport listening to this woman bitch to the agent at the gate about missing her connecting flight and getting on the phone with her travel agent and whatnot. woman was insane. got to newark in time to make my connection to bradley. so i then flew home to bradley. came into ct around 515 and spotted jen immediately. :D so we went to baggage claim and it turns out i was supposed to pick my luggage off before heading to bradley first? anyways, jen took me back to my place and yeah. turns out my parents are excellent at embarrassing me infront of someone theyve known for 5 minutes. jen stayed over to have supper, and it was real nice. we hung out til she left around 130ish? i was waiting for the delivery to come with my luggage. they said 4-6 hours, which put it at 2-4am. so when jen left, it was sitting on the steps. luckily, i didnt actually lose the luggage, so that was good. anyways, all the fears and doubts and whatnots of things possibly going wrong when i came home just went out the door (afterall, jen was the main reason i went home). wednesday just happened to be perfect.

thurs, 27/02- yay. i woke up at 7am to take elise to the high school. saw foley, duclos, mr. white, mrs. mckenna, and mrs. cipollini. was supposed to bring the magazines for mrs. mckenna, but i forgot. she had a class so she couldnt really talk, so i went to mrs. cip and she was speaking to me entirely in french, which was decent practice for me and embarassment for elise ;-) other than that, not much doing at swhs so i went to sbm to take care of some banking. spent about 2 hours there schmoozing and then left. went home to take a 45 min nap only to be awoken by jen coming over. so she was over til we had to pick up elise at the hs at 345. went home and got stuff ready for the coldplay concert at the oakdale and friday and then booked it to jens place to get her stuff before heading to wallingford. made it to wallingford on time to sell alan jens tix and then head in. setlist at oakdale was same as at the bell centre, only no french. and slightly better acoustics. but about 6000 less fans. anyways, it too was an amazing show and im so glad i got to go to it with jen. after the concert i booked it up to uconn with jen because i hate 195. that road is sooooo tedious to drive. everytime you think you're there, theres another corner. i hate driving it. so we went back, i went to sleep around 330 and woke up...

fri, 28/02- at 615 in the morning. time to be out of uconn at 7am to be in new haven for the 850 train to grand central. slept sorta on the train, got off, took the 456 to 59th and lexington, got off and went to sony on 550 madison ave. got my visitor pass and checked in, got off the elevator and laughed that i was actually on the 16th floor of sony. :-D anyways, i had my interview with seth's uncle's assistant and it went excellently. basically ive got the position if i can work out numbers with my parents. thats my only obstacle. she said shes even gonna submit my resume directly over to epic since thats probably where id be better off in terms of musical interest. the position i have right now is in the sales division of classical- basically i get free cds and get to see soundscan figures, etc... i cant complain though because ill have my foot in the door at sony. she thinks id be real good for A&R work. and i also mentioned rane a bunch of times. anyways. after the interview, i called andrew to get margarets number and then took the 19 to 116th and visited margaret at barnard. she was up to her ears with people for her itasa convention, so i got to meet a lot of them, including a couple people she mentions on her website (which ended up inspiring me to ripoff her peeps page). went downstairs with her friends jon and roger to get some bubble tea, which tasted less like tea and more like melted jolly rancher with tapiocas. i met so many taiwanese people though it was hilarious. well for me atleast. i was meeting like everyone and i knew basically no one. but it was fun nonetheless and i know margaret was up to her ears with stuff and felt bad she couldnt do anything with me, but it was still fun to be able to visit her at school since shes coming up here in 9 days, and also give her some chill time since she was going nuts. anyways, took the 7pm train to westport where zoya picked me up and we went to new haven for pepes. shed been running around from skidmore to westport and then lugging boxes for her mothers move into a new apartment, so she was starving also, so it was good. a 1/2 hr wait, but the pizza was good this time (theyd been lagging the last couple of times) so yeah. finally got home around 1130, talked to jen and crashed.

sat, 01/03- woke up around noon trying to catch up some sleep. um, not much going on in the afternoon other than i talked to my parents about the internship. basically we crunched numbers and i think im probably gonna commute to sony 2 days a week and then work sbm the other 4 (only cause i know sbm will be flexible with my schedule). anyways. andrew came over around 430, we went to his new place, went to big y to pick up flowers for jens mom in the hospital, and then booked it to the hospital. jens dad took a picture of us when he came down to meet me and then we went to the wolf pack game. it was the wolf pack vs. the binghamton senators and the wolf pack won 5-1. good game, lots more penalties than in the nhl. anyways, it was fun to hang with the three of them since it was my only time i could see andrew all weekend. got my picture with spongebob, got a free shirt, etc etc. mucho fun. went to windsor to let jen get her car, then we drove back to my house, andrew left, jen and i started watching amelie, and jen left around 130ish. i started packing up for here and went to sleep around 330.

sun, 02/03- woke up around 730ish and had a 10am flight to newark. whilst in newark, i saw a couple people ive seen around campus, so we all took the same flight back. i learned a travel tip. if you can handle sitting in an exit row, you get more leg room. i had exit row both flights back and it was really nice. ill remember that next time. anyways, got into dorval and customs and downtown around 345ish, chilled back here and that was about it for sunday.

mon, 03/03- not much doing yesterday. woke up with a head cold again (probably due to the weekends lack of sleep so i decided to sleep in and go to french. after french i got some pictures developed. ive decided to centralise my picture galleries on one page. you may have noticed a new button that lets you go straight to galleries. but its only for existing galleries. anyways, we went to see adaptation last night. excellent excellent movie, although i think i say so only because the dichotomy of the twin brothers reminds me of myself. i said that after the movie and i think seth thought i was joking or something, but it was true. got back and essentially went to bed. i did a great bit of upgrading that i didnt actually get to update, but here it is. all in all, i say it was one of the best weeks of my life. i got to have my cake and eat it with everything that went on and i couldnt be more happier with jen. well unless i actually got to be with her more. i just wish she would come up here already. its only been 4 days and already i miss her like crazy. yeah, things went well, excellent. i love that girl.

03/03/03(845pm)- well theres things to talk about, flights in, stupid people in airports/new and "improved" security measures in airports, jen picking me up, my luggage in newark, dinner with my parents, swhs, sbm, jen, coldplay, uconn, nyc, train, interview with sony, barnard with margaret/itasa, pepes with zoya, sony options, andrews place, jen/andrew and the wolfpack, jen, flight out. and now im back to the swing of things, but thats about it. going to see adaptation tonight. oh and you may have noticed a new section of my site on the left. its my version of margarets peeps page called "peeps du smalrus." if you are missing, its probably because i dont have a picture of you scanned. send me one and ill put it up. anyways, this weekend was downright amazing (as was the whole week) and im glad things worked out perfectly with jen. i already miss her, i just wish i knew when i get to see her again. shes amazing. thats all ive got to say for now.

Google Finance

I've become a big advocate of Google. I think they truly have managed to break the hold of Microsoft and if anything, have also demonstrated the sheer power of the cliched Web 2.0. This finance site is no small potatoes either. The graphs are so simple yet so lush in data, and the rest of the pages are no different. Perhaps the most appealing feature is the portfolio which, with a Google account, lets you enter in how many shares of a stock you own and track all of its vitals in one page. I entered in my 401k breakdown and at any given time, it lets me visualise my account better than my 401k planner does.

Gastroenteritis

The stomach flu got me at the end of the year, making for the worst sickness I've felt in probably 10-15 years. Every hour, I was either on or over the toilet and at times, had to keep a bag next to the bed for those times I couldn't make it to the toilet fast enough. From what I've heard, I wasn't the only one to catch this horrible disaster in the past 2-3 weeks. I was supposed to go to Andrew's for the opening of the 7 year old time capsule and video but the stomach flu sidelined my plans (I'm finally at about 85% recovery) and for that, you are the asshole of the week.
